Tattoos have become very popular for the past 10 years. The belief that tattoos are rebellious, shocking or show the girl in poor light has vanished. As the taboos have gained in popularity, they have become widely accepted. This change has mainly been due to celebrities sporting them. It is guessed about 36% of people aged 18 - 25 and 40% of those aged 26 - 40 have at least one tattoo. But the fact remains that more men have tattoos than women.

Tattoos for girls are more feminine in character. They are quite smaller and more delicate with thinner lines and are normally limited to 1 or 2 body parts. Similar to accessories or accent pieces. The most popular area on which the girls get tattoos are the lower back, left shoulder, ankle, upper breast or bikini area. Mostly lower back is chosen as it is not always shown but can be shown. Another preferred area is the shoulder. Traditionally, the left shoulder is called as the feminine shoulder and having a tattoo can look great if wearing tank tops or halter-tops. Ankle tattoos look cute and today many girls are opting to get tattoos on the top of the foot or little delicate ones on their toes. They look great while wearing sandals or flip-flops. Similar to the lower back tattoo, tattoos on the upper breast or bikini area need not be shown.

Few tattoo ideas for girls, which are feminine and with a long history are: sun, flower, angel wings, fairy, star, butterfly, Celtic and Zodiac symbols, dolphin, rose, and heart. Though traditional, these tattoo ideas are always evergreen due to the meaning to the wearer, and many tattoo artists would love to create a unique design.
