On August 15, 1954, The President awarded the title of Bharat Ratna to Mr. C. Rajagopalachari, former Chief Minister of Madras, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan, Vice-President, and Dr. C.V. Raman, eminent scientist. The award is for exceptional service towards the advancement of art, literature and science and in recognition of public service of the highest order.
Mr. Rajagopalachari, Dr. Radhakrishnan and Dr. C.V. Raman are the first recipients of the Bharat Ratna.
