The Maltese Dog

The Maltese is a small Toy dog whose height does not exceed 10 inches up to the shoulders. His weight is between 6 – 9 pounds and the body is covered by a long coat of white, straight silky fur. Maltese are very sweet and cuddly little dogs who have been favoured by the royals for over 28 centuries. The Greeks, Italians and Maltese honored this breed. Today both rich and the commoners adore this breed.

Devotion, love and trust for the owner are the distinguishing characteristics of this breed. The mild temperament and boisterous nature are the two essential reasons why this breed is much adored. But avoid overpampering, since this can spoil their good characteristics and make them very overprotective of their master and jealousy towards others who are close to their owner. Besides controlling him will be a hard task, if you pamper him unreservedly. You should teach him his proper position in your home. Ensure he gets correct socialization and basic obedience training.

Maltese are the right size for apartments and enjoy living close to their master. Ensure they get adequate exercise but even if you can’t, take care they remain active. Take them for few small walks daily and play with them. Loving this breed is simpler than tending for them. His coat as well as his eyes should be washed daily. This breed can suffer from tear stain, a condition resulting in watery eyes of the dog, leading to goopy discharge from the corner of the eyes. This results in the hair below the Maltese’s eye to take on a deep rusted red hue. Keep the hair away from their eyes by tying it up on their head for long hair and clean the buildup to control the tear stain.

Maltese dogs do not shed their coat, but it mats easily and gets dirty. This means if you own the dog, buy grooming supplies like combs, a brush, and dog shampoo. These items are the necessary part of the Maltese care. Ensure you comb the dog’s hair daily. If his hair is not cut short, and is long enough to sweep the floor, you should brush his coat number of times every day. Give him a monthly bath to retain the unblemished whiteness of this coat. Trim the coat periodically.

Maltese generally live for 15 years of age, but can live till 18 years sometimes. They can suffer from sunburn, kidney stones, tooth, eye, and knee problems. They also suffer from shaking from chills or condition called White Dog Shaker Syndrome.
The Maltese loves the owner and his family, puts up with well-behaved children and gets along well with other family pets. He is truly a dog everyone should have.
