The causes of Jetlag
If you are a frequent traveler, traveling across various time zones, jet lag is one of the sleep disorders that you will suffer from. Research has indicated that about 74% of the international travelers of all ages, races and sexes suffer from this problem. If you already have a sleep problem, your symptoms are a lot worse.
As the number of time zones you travel increases, your
jet lag
also increases. If the time difference between your starting point and destination is very small, you may not experience any jet lag. But as the difference increases, your jet lag will worsen with each increase in the time zone.
The major and fast changes in the time zones that occur when you travel long distance create the difference between the local time and the time as per your body’s internal clock. Our body’s internal clock derives its time from the surrounding factors like temperature, humidity and the daily shift from daylight to darkness. These factors allow your body clock to run as a series of twenty four cycles called circadian rhythms. These rhythms control a lot of your body’s functions, particularly the sleeping function.
When you fly on a long distance trip, this harmony of the body clock with the external time is disturbed. This upsets the entire rhythm of the day, causing you to do things that you would not do at that time like trouble while sleeping at night, remaining alert throughout the day and eating at odd hours. This gives rise to jet lag.
