Tips to Choose the Right Tent
When
buying your tent
, go for the tent features that will satisfy you for a long time. Your tent is a home when you are out of home, so you should be happy there. Determine your budget and the purpose for which you will be using the tent. This will allow to select the right tent for your budget.
What size should you select?
Think about the number of people who will sleep in the tent and in what way you want to use it. E.g. if you want to go backpacking, go for a lightweight tent, but for family camping the weight and size do not play a main role. The capacity of the tent depends on the number of standard-sleeping bags that can be easily accommodated and the square footage.
Go for a
tent
that is slightly bigger than the number of people who are going to sleep in it, giving you some elbow room and place for keeping your equipment and gear. If you are camping with your family, always choose bigger that can accommodate minimum 2 people. Multi room tents are ideal for families.
The 2-room styles give the adults some privacy from the children. There is also a 3-room tent that has 2 sleeping rooms and a screened-in room that can be used as an eating or changing area, keeping you away from the elements. The multi room tents offer various choices, so irrespective of your selection; you will get a good deal.
What are the things to consider?
Tents with fine netting or mesh:
This is very important for noseeums and mosquitoes. Noseeums are small gnats far smaller than mosquitoes so you may have to look around a bit for the finer netting.
Tents with aluminum poles:
Many tents have fiberglass poles, but they can break, as they are fragile. Do not worry if they break or there is a kink in the pole as you can get a replacement in any camping store.
Sufficient rainfly with the tent:
The tent’s umbrella should be rainfly. Opting for bigger rainfly will put you in a good position. It should go down farther on the sides of the tent and not simply across the top. These tent umbrellas are waterproof and the walls of the tent should be water-repellant.
Double stitching and folded seams:
Ensure the stitches are strong to prevent leaks. The common rule is when you pull the material at the seams and if the other side is visible, then this tent will leak. Use some type of seam sealer for added protection.
Tents with a floor in single piece:
The floors of tents use a waterproof material, which should be above by some inches on all sides before it is stitched into the walls of the tent. Seams in the floor can spring leaks.
Sufficient roof vent:
Choose a quite big roof vent to prevent the tent from becoming stuffy. The roof vent helps in getting proper airflow to avoid concentration in the tent.
Tents with bigger stake loops:
Each tent should have stake loops the middle of each side and in each corner at the base of the tent. The loops should be big enough to let you use them with the big plastic stakes available as substitutes in camping stores. The best ones use the superior quality material as the plastic loops can crack while inserting the stakes.
Tents with strong zippers:
As you will be moving in and out of the tent a lot, select one with a zipper. The zipper should be strong enough to withstand regular use.
