Tips to Choose your Cosmetics Products
The cosmetics you apply to your skin are as important as the food you consume. Chemicals in the
cosmetics
when in contact with your skin enter your bloodstream. Most of the ingredients used in cosmetics and personal care products are poisonous, although they may not show any external reaction on the skin. Some are carcinogens, while others may combine with other ingredients to produce carcinogenic substances.
Use these tips to select safer and healthier
cosmetics and personal care products
:
1.
Find out the Ingredients used in cosmetics
: Most products are described in such a way that they sell easily but don’t have correct information about the product. The sales information on the label doesn't tell you anything regarding the safety and quality of the ingredients used in the product. You should check the ingredients list carefully to get correct details regarding the product. Finding the ingredient list in many cases may not be easy. At times, it can be so small that you can only read it through a magnifying glass as manufacturer does not want you to do so. Statutory requirements make it mandatory for manufacturers to list the ingredients on the product label in order of quantity. The ingredient used the most is listed first, and the ingredient in the smallest quantity comes last.
2.
Check the Safety of Ingredients
: The cosmetics and personal care industry does not have very strict regulations governing it. There are over 12,000 ingredients that are allowed to be used in cosmetics and personal care products, but many of them have not been tested sufficiently or completely. Many products use carcinogenic ingredients along with ingredients that increase the rate absorption of the product through the skin into the bloodstream. Ensure the safety of the products you're buying, by comparing it against a suitable safety list.
3.
Don’t be taken in by the sales pitch and instead focus on getting correct information
: Most of the words used by the manufacturers on labels to endorse their products don’t have "official definitions", allowing the manufacturer to use it the way they want. Generally these terms are very confusing. Watch out for: Natural – can use all natural ingredients, some or none at all; Hypoallergenic – can be tested or used as per the manufacturer’s whim; no need for proof; Fragrance free – absence of noticeable smell but may have fragrant ingredients.
4.
More is Not necessarily Better
: Select products with fewer ingredients, Besides the fact that most ingredients have not been sufficiently tested, the ones tested have only undergone individual test, not in conjunction with other ingredients. The effects of various ingredients used in innumerable different combinations are unknown. Also the results of using various different products, one over the other, or the effects of continuous use of ingredients or products over time are unknown.
5.
Buy the products from companies manufacturing Healthy Products
: Since consumers are rapidly becoming more aware of using safer and healthier products, many manufacturers are misusing this awareness to launch pseudo-healthy products. The label resembles a natural and healthy product, but a quick glance at the ingredients’ list shows it is not so. On the other hand there are companies committed to manufacturing safe and natural cosmetics and personal care products. Most of these are small companies who began operating due to absence of healthy products and a few of them use organic and food grade ingredients.
As our world is increasingly becoming toxic, we have lost control over many things. But we can definitely control what we put in and on our bodies, if we spend time to educate ourselves and make safe and healthy choices. With the rising number of chemicals in almost everything today, it’s essential for all to become health conscious. Having control over what you put into and on your body will improve your quality of life and make a difference between life and death.
