Tips to Clean Jewelry

A jewelry not only gives you pleasure but is also an investment and so should be tended nicely in order to prevent the loss of its beauty and value. There are few cases where you should not wear jewelry. E.g. while cleaning the house, particularly when using abrasive and strong chemicals. The chemicals can scratch or corrode the jewelry surfaces. This is also applicable to cosmetics like cleansing creams and lotions.

Water can damage some kinds of jewelry and gemstones. Hence it makes sense to remove jewelry while bathing, swimming or being drenched by the rain. These measures are necessary to protect your jewelry. But they do nothing to retain the cleanliness and luster of the jewelry. Spend time and effort to frequently clean your possessions. Few very costly jewelry items have to be cleaned professionally by a jeweler but most delicate jewelry can be done with this elementary cleaning method.
The basic method of cleaning jewelry consists of 4 simple steps.

First, wipe the jewelry with soft cloth soaked in a mixture of mild soap and warm water. Don’t use harsh detergents and stain removers for delicate jewelry.
Secondly, wash the jewelry with warm water again. But don’t soak the jewelry in water. Some jewelry, like those using silver and gold can be damaged by water.

Third, polish the jewelry with soft cloth. Don’ use brushes or any bristled item for fine jewelry.

And lastly, dry the jewelry thoroughly before keeping it in a pouch or box.
There are some kinds of jewelry and gemstones that require unique approaches to cleaning. E.g. lapis lazuli should be cleaned with a mixture of cold water with little mild soap. Other gemstones that are affected with hot water are emeralds, jade, marcasite, and turquoise. Jewelry using jade, and pearls, should be cleaned with soft wet cloth. Rub them gently. But Emeralds and opals can put up with soaking in cold water for some time.

A jewelry item with diamonds needs a different approach. Diamonds, despite their strength, can easily lose their sheen and luster as they can lodge grease and dust. The oils secreted by the skin can be left on the diamond, thereby educing the jewelry's shine. Prevent this from happening by cleaning it regularly at least once a week. You can clean the diamond quickly with a toothbrush having gentle bristles. The toothbrush should be first dipped in a cleaner fluid for diamond. It is an ammonia-based fluid. To remove stubborn dirt, soak the diamond overnight in this fluid. But don’t use any other type of cleaning liquids like those having chlorine and abrasives on diamond.

Lastly, the brushing and soaking the diamond jewelry is not advisable if the diamond is in a setting. The cleaning fluid and the toothbrush bristles can loosen the jeweler's cement that binds the diamond. If there is a setting the diamond jewelry should be taken to a professional jeweler.
