Toy Poodles and the Diseases They Are Prone To

Toy Poodles are the smallest type of the Poodle dog breed. Toy Poodles are 10 inches or lesser at the highest point of the shoulders. The breed is stylish, lively, little dog that is responsive yet very intelligent that adapts well to training. Depending on its lines in the poodles pedigree and the health situation of a specific dog, a Toy Poodle survives on an average of 14 to 15 years. Like other dog breeds, the Poodle is susceptible to certain diseases that can harm the health. The Toy and Miniature suffer from the same problems, while the Standard Poodle has different.

Cataract. Cataract is one of the most normal diseases affecting the dog ‘s eyes. Cataract affects all types of dogs but some dogs are more susceptible to the disease than the others. This breakdown implies that there is a problem in the arrangement of the lens fibers or its capsule. This disease can worsen a dog's vision. As of now, only surgery can  treat this problem. However, there are many procedures used to remove the troubled lens; removing the complete lens and adjacent capsule, removing just the lens, phacoemulsification of the lens and aspiration and desication of the lens.

Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA). Pra is a problem of the retina which can affect both eyes at the same time. Initial stage of PRA is evident by problem of viewing in dim light which can be evident just after birth. Night blindness sets in from 1-5 years and can later lead to complete blindness. ERG (electroretinograph) should be performed to acknowledge that the dog has PRA. Presently, there is no cure to halt the disease, but the worsening of the retina can be reduced by taking nutritional antioxidant supplementation for retinal health.

Entropion. Entropion is another eye problem upsetting the eyelids. Here the upper or the lower of the eyelids are turned inward and the eyelashes inflame the eyeball itself due to frequent rubbing. Though it is generally inherited, entropion can also occur due to eye injury or infection. Tearing, squinting, rubbing eyes and thick discharge from the eyes are symptoms of entropion. Careful checking of the eye, especially of the eyelid is carried out to detect the presence of Entropion. As wit cataract, surgery is needed to rectify the problem.
