Tummy Tuck Facts
One of the major operations that have become popular in recent times is the
tummy tuck or abdominoplasty.
It has shown the highest growth of more than 60% in the last 3 years as against other types of plastic surgeries. It helps people who have loose abdominal skin as well as fat deposited in the abdomen to get slimmer, trimmer and flatter abdomen. A tummy tuck is a major invasive surgery. Hence it is highly risky and you need to spend a lot of time recuperating. So you need to think about this before undergoing surgery and decide carefully if you want to face the dangers associated with the surgery.
This process involves removing the extra layers of skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen. Then the skin left is pulled tightly, thus at times tightening the abdominal muscles. The aim of the surgery is to remove the excess loose flesh caused either by rapid weight loss or pregnancy, and then tighten the remaining flesh. However, it is not a primary means of reducing fat. At times the pain from this surgery can last as long as a year. Hence you have to be aware of these pitfalls before going under the surgeon’s knife.
The other major drawback of this surgery is that is can leave a prominent and permanent scar, which can go horizontally along the entire breadth of the body from hip to hip, according to the amount of skin you have to lose. Again, depending on the type of tummy tuck the scar can go vertically from the pelvis to the chest, but this is rare. The severity of the scars depends on the amount of skin removed, the speed of recovery, the quality of scars on the body, the skill of the surgeon and the procedure used.
It is possible to perform this surgery along with any other surgery, either cosmetic or general. Though it can be performed by itself, generally it is combined with liposuction, meant for removing the excess fat. Once liposuction is done, tummy tuck tightens and tones the skin where the liposuction was done. If you have undergone dieting, you should perform this surgery once you have reached your desirable weight.
Be very clear about your expectations from the surgery before consulting the surgeons. Have an open discussion with them to discuss your goals. They are the best guides to inform you whether your expectations are realistic or not. They can also inform you about other safer alternatives for reaching your goals.
Always go for a surgeon, certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery as they have stringent requirements to qualify the surgeon. The board requires the surgeon to be graduated from a medical school with good accreditation. They must be licensed practitioner in their residential state and must have completed three years of training in general surgery as a resident doctor in a program authorized by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. You can call up the board to check out the credentials of the doctor or refer to The Official ABMS Directory of Board-Certified Medical Specialists.
