Types of Abdominoplasty or Tummy Tuck
Abdominoplasty,
also called tummy tuck, is an important surgery for people in good shape and health but carry lots of fat in their abdominal area or have plenty of loose skin. It is an effective way to reduce the bulging belly but can leave a lengthy, permanent and at times a visible scar that can reach up to the hipbones. Women whose abdominal muscles were stretched during the earlier pregnancies and who do not intend to get pregnant as well as morbidly obese whose skin has lost its elasticity are the prime targets for this surgery. There are different types of surgical procedures depending on the amount of additional fat and skin of the patient and the area where this excess is stored.
Tummy Tuck:
A cut is made along the line between the hipbones and close to belly button. Then the excess skin is removed from the walls of abdomen till the ribs, the vertical muscles of the stomach are tightened and the layer of additional fat over the abdomen is removed. The skin is pulled down and chopped off. The remaining layer is sewn into the original place where the cut was initially made.
Mini Tummy Tuck:
Mini-abdominoplasty is always combined with tumescent liposuction. It is a limited procedure but very effective for many. It is usually performed for people whose muscle tone as well as skin elasticity in the lower abdomen below belly button is missing. The incision is smaller and the recovery is quicker. Hence this is an effective solution for people with slight belly.
Endoscopic Tummy Tuck:
This abdominoplasty is performed using a small camera called endoscope. It is recommended for people carrying excess fat bellow the belly button, but their skin has retained its elasticity. Muscles are tightened and fat removed by liposuction through small holes drilled above the pubis or through belly button. It is a very popular method as it leaves practically no scars. But it carries a high risk of infection if the cut is not properly drained.
Panniculectomy Surgery:
This process removes the large overlap of skin in the lower abdomen and is performed on the morbidly obese who have slimmed down. If this surgery is not done, they run the risk of suffering from various chronic and frequent skin conditions like intertrigo, intertriginous dermatitis, cellulites, ulcerations, necrosis, and inflammation of subcutaneous fatty tissue. This surgery simply removes the extra layers of fat and skin in the area from just above mons pubis to knees or below.
