Uses of Satellite Phone
Cable connections and radio lines have their own drawbacks. They cannot work in the remote areas. With the industries spreading out in the remote areas, there is a need for providing proper communication in remote areas. Major advances have taken place in the field of communication, and
Satellite phone systems
have been introduced to provide communication in those areas.
Satellite phone systems have found widespread use because it is difficult to connect all the parts of the earth with cable lines and the bandwidth of radio frequencies that connected major portions of the earth is over. Low Earth Orbiting (LEO) satellites are one of the various satellite phone systems. They are used more than the geo stationary satellites due to absence of delay. The geo stationary satellites introduce delay that depends on the distance where it is located. The smallest delay is 0.5 seconds and is the major handicap of the geo stationary satellites.
The system of satellite phones consists of the collection of LEO satellites. This is because these satellites are located close to the earth and move faster than the earth, and so they become invisible sometimes. These satellites are not used singly but in clusters. While using a cluster of such LEO satellites, when one of them moves out of the earth’s horizon, it is immediately replaced by another one. So there is no delay in receiving the calls.
The technology used by the satellite phones varies from service providers. The major service providers are
GlobalStar systems and Iridium systems.
These phones also consist of different techniques used in data transmission, whether audio or video.
Certain companies like Iridium use time division multiple access scheme to handle the growing number of calls. It includes satellite-to-satellite connections to allow the handsets to connect directly to the satellites. The GlobalStar uses the latest digital technology called code division multiple access and satellites to handle their quota of calls.
This system uses satellites simply as relay stations which means they receive and forward the calls to the gateways located on the earth. This call is then transmitted to the public switched telephone network. Irrespective of the technology used, the primary aim of the satellite phone systems and service providers is to make you easily accessible wherever you are.
