What is Organic Chicken
Anybody
eating broiler chickens
should be aware of the pathetic conditions under which these chickens are bred. These chickens live in a floor space that is equivalent to a sheet of A4 paper. They are over-fed, to reach slaughter weight within 6 weeks that would normally take 4 months.
Modern intensive systems of poultry production have given cheap meat for the consumer, but with a price. Within the intensive chicken houses that are springing up in large numbers throughout the country, nearly 40,000 birds are crammed, i.e. 2 birds per square foot, into a windowless building, with practically low amounts of artificial light. Then they are fed drugs to increase the rate of growth. With plenty of animals packed together in a highly stressful environment, the rates of infection are also quite high. These infections are then passed on to humans, who consume such meat. The solution to the problem lies in organic chicken.
Organic farmers
carry out various tasks to ensure the chickens are brought up as naturally as possible. They don’t use antibiotic growth promoters on the sick animals but get them treated with appropriate veterinary medicine. Only in extreme cases, they give antibiotics, but not regularly and frequently that is a daily occurrence in almost all non-organic poultry.
Organic poultry
is bred on special feed consisting of only cereals, vegetable protein, little fish meal, and a vitamin/mineral supplement. These chickens are fed on a diet that does not contain genetically modified feedstuffs (GMOs). A completely organic chicken must be given a diet consisting of organically grown grain, free from artificial fertilizers or sprays. As this feed is quite expensive, organic chicken is also quite expensive.
The number of
chickens
kept in one shed on Soil Association registered farms, does not exceed 1,000. On the other hand, a non-organic intensive chicken farm can house as many as 40,000 in a shed. Organic birds are kept free-range, and can access clean pasture at any time in the day, except in the bad weather. Non-organic birds are practically always caged throughout the day.
Also, the
Soil Association
requires all the processed chicken products are fully and clearly labeled. This lets them retrace the farm from which the chicken products have come, in case if any illegal ingredient is found. As per their organic certification standards, every chicken item must be slightly processed, which is quite practical. Organic standards have a legal status. All organic businesses must possess legal license and have to undergo inspection at least once a year. This makes organic meat a far better choice, in terms of health and environment.
