What is Snuba?
Snuba is a combination of the words scuba and snorkel
. Snuba divers wear equipment jus like that of scuba divers: fins, mask, and a bodysuit. But the air tank usually worn on scuba divers back, is fixed to a specially crafted raft floating on the water surface. The air supply to the snuba divers goes through a 20-foot hose, just letting the diver to travel a maximum depth of 20 feet. The raft carrying the water tanks is designed to move along with the snuba diver's movements.
Basically, snuba is the combination of the benefits of both
snorkeling and scuba diving
. It gives you the safety of snorkeling and the freedom to risk below water to view native fish or flora. Snuba is a "patented underwater diving system", and is a combination of both snorkeling and scuba diving. Snuba lets users to watch scenery from the surface, but to travel a total distance of 20 feet from a raft, which supports your air tanks.
You do not need snorkel or scuba experience for snuba, and hence it is a safe and simple experience. No heavy training, no certification or license is needed. Unlike scuba diving, you do not need heavy equipment in snuba, as the air tanks are assisted by a floating raft. Overall snuba is relaxing and even people who cannot swim well enjoy Snuba.
Snuba
is a method of bringing together your children and family. Though Snuba uses compressed air, you need not worry about decompression problems due to the comparative shallow depth. Snuba needs minimal equipment, and regular contact with the surface above the water.
Don’t hold your breath when below the water and remember to go up and down slowly. Slow ascents and descents will let your ears and lungs to withstand pressure just as in an airplane.
Though snuba users are limited to a depth of 20 feet, in general, Snuba gives them complete freedom of movement and total control. Users breathe from a standard diving regulator that is fixed to a 20-foot air tube to an air tank floating on the surface of the water in a floating raft. As you go through the underwater, the raft follows you, letting you go down 20 feet deep. This raft requires the need of heavy diving equipment required for scuba diving.
Just like
scuba diving
, snuba allows you to feel as though you are a part of the underwater world. The reefs you swim in contain beautiful and plentiful marine life, but always respect the ocean by not touching or breaking coral or taking away anything from the ocean.
Coral is very delicate and it can possibly destroy thousands of years of growth in a few seconds. Corals like fire coral are harmful. Fire coral can sting and various other corals have defense mechanisms, so it's better to stay away from any type of coral. As snuba lets you go deeper than the normal snorkeler you will see more ocean life, like eels and poisonous fish. Take care to simply see and don’t touch or irritate the ocean life. A no touch policy is the safest method to enjoy a successful snuba experience.
Before going for snuba, ensure you remove all the shiny jewelry, especially silver. Though not frequent, at times silver jewelry in the water looks like small fish that can entice small fish like a barracuda. It may be mistaken regarding your jewelry and inch closer than you or other swimmers may prefer.
