What to look for in a PDA
Buying a PDA
is like choosing your secretary. If it just looks good, then it is useless. Similarly, while being efficient, wouldn’t it be better if it were good looking too?
PDA, or Personal Digital Assistant, is expected to be what it stands for. There are various categories under which you can judge the different PDAs. First and foremost is its purpose. Would it be solely an mp3 player, a camera or just a phone? A PDA can not only act as a camera, mp3 player or a phone but also as a word processor, internet capable device and connect to your computer or other Bluetooth or USB supporting devices.
Next comes the
size of the PDA
. Some people prefer large PDAs while others need smaller devices. The size affects various factors like the screen size, the ease with which you can enter data etc. So think over this carefully. Also, the screen should have enough resolution as well as brightness so that it is visible clearly in all types of environment. Test the PDAs in different settings to ensure this.
Once you’ve chosen the size of your PDA, decide the mode of data entry. Touch screens are the latest in technology, which employ a stylus while some have handwriting recognition software. Hence it is advisable to try your hand at these and find out if you are comfortable using them.
Technically looking, any PDA should have extendable memory slot and around 32 MB RAM should be allotted to the device for its smooth operation. Some applications require more than that and this should be looked into before hand. Also, ensure that your PDA should be WiFi capable and can easily connect to other devices so that you can transfer data from your PDA to your laptop or desktop etc.
Remember, if you don’t put enough effort in choosing the right PDA, you’ll have to end up compromising. You’ll not just end up wasting money but also your valuable time which could have been put to better use. So be smart and do your homework right.
