Why Do I get Knee Pain

Knee joint involves the articulation of the femur, present in the upper part and the tibia, present in the lower part. On their articulating surfaces, a bloodless tissue, a cartilage, is present which receives its nutrient from the synovial fluid. This cartilage ensures smooth motion. Muscles and ligaments also contribute to the formation and functioning of the joint.

When there is any fault in one or more of these components, knee pain occurs. It needn’t be restricted to the old age and can also be present in the younger generation. Basically, knee pain can have two broad causes.

Any disease affecting the knee joint can cause pain in the knee. Age related factors can cause thinning of the cartilage as the water retention ability of the tissue is reduced, which leads to pain during movement. Other conditions such as disturbed growth hormone release, diabetes and gout are also reasons for knee pain.

Mechanical causes can range from an incorrect posture which causes the pressure bearing area to change from a thicker part of the bone to a thinner part causing damage and pain. Wrong posture may occur due to a flat foot or an overly arched foot. This needs correction in order to feel better. Most of the sportsmen involved in games which require a lot of running or sudden changes in direction while running etc end up with some knee trouble eventually. This is due to the exertion over the knee joint which causes various conditions. An overweight person has a higher tendency to knee pain because the bones involved are unable to sustain so much weight for a long time.

Some of these conditions can be treated medically, by reducing the inflammation thereby reducing the pain. However, some other conditions, especially sports injuries need to be surgically corrected. Exercises that help in strengthening of the muscles involved in a joint are an important aspect and must be taken seriously in order to avoid knee pain for as long as possible.
