Your pet is the silent healer
Pets
have the ability to help the sick recover faster. Even those suffering from deep shock come round faster in the company of pets.
Children who cannot read properly are encouraged to read in the presence of ‘therapy dogs’. This experiment on ‘children reading to dogs’ has been very successful. The dogs are taken to schools and befriend such children who read stories to the dogs. Children acquire confidence and improve their reading skills as the dog listens happily without any comment on the child’s performance.
During natural calamities like earthquakes, floods or hurricanes therapy dogs are of great help and provide immense comfort to the victims. The victims hug and pet these dogs to get some relief. It’s hard to imagine how understanding a dog can be specially in grim situation.
These therapy dogs are regular visitors to hospitals and old age homes. They interact with the patients and encourage them to smile and forget their miseries. Children enjoy the tricks performed by these dogs and look forward to every visit. These dogs help to cheer up patients who talk to them and pet them.
Therapy dogs as well as the handlers have to be specially trained to be able to cope with their tasks. It is of utmost importance that the dog should be in excellent health, free from allergies and able to cope with all the noise and activity. The handler should love dogs and should be ready to spend a lot of time training the dog. He should insure himself against accidents.
A
therapy dog
can work wonders even with terminally ill patients. They help patients to develop more positive attitudes that go a long way in improving their health.
